Implementing the broad food outlook and vigorously developing woody oil crops are core strategic measures to alleviate the pressure on China’s edible vegetable oil security.The special issue of China Oils and Fats takes camellia oleifera and walnuts as core representatives. Based on the historical supply of the industry and current market demand, the study constructs three development scenarios: conventional growth, natural growth and policy-supported growth. Using the regARIMA model, it accurately predicts the yield increase potential of woody oil crops from 2025 to 2035. pointing out the path for high-quality development of the industry.

Compared with traditional herbaceous oil crops, woody oil crops have prominent advantages in long-term returns, ecological adaptability and resource utilization. They can not only effectively ease the shortage of cultivated land, but also optimize the supply structure of domestic edible vegetable oil, acting as an irreplaceable green support for ensuring grain and oil security.Under the existing policy framework, the total output of woody oil crops is expected to reach 13.4897 million tons in 2030 and 16.2803 million tons in 2035. With strengthened policy support, the output can be further raised to 16.6610 million tons and 22.7070 million tons respectively. Its contribution rate to edible vegetable oil supply security will surge from 2.24% in 2023 to 7.34% in 2035. greatly improving the domestic self-sufficiency level of oils and fats.

In the future, the yield increase of woody oil crops will center on three core goals: raising per unit yield, expanding planting area and reducing losses, with the key being the optimized allocation of land, improved varieties, planting techniques and agricultural machinery.To this end, we need to keep improving the policy system of “producing oil from forests”, break through the bottleneck of per unit yield via scientific and technological innovation, expand planting scale based on regional resource endowments, and boost processing efficiency to cut oil extraction losses.
